Each year on the 6th January Greece celebrates Epiphany, or as we call it, Theophany, to mark the baptism of Jesus Christ. ![]()

One of the most important rituals performed on this day is the ‘great blessing of the waters.’![]()
The tradition is that a Greek Orthodox priest throws a special cross into the sea and many brave young men and boys dive into cold water to retrieve it. The lucky person who finds and returns the cross is blessed by the priest for the whole year.
